Inside the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350
During the 1990s, Mercedes went through significant changes. The automaker was facing steep competition from upstarts such as Lexus that were delivering Benz-like levels of quality for thousands less. That pressured Mercedes to end their longstanding approach to car building. No longer would they engineer the best car possible no matter the cost. Instead, they would build cars to strict cost targets. Mercedes 350 This week, I have the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E350 mid-sized luxury sedan, one of the most popular Benz models sold today. It slots between the smaller C-Class and the super-large S-Class flagship sedan. Mercedes did a mid-cycle refresh of the E-Class including updates to the MBUX infotainment system, and they refreshed the front and rear end. They also made the standard engine a 4-cylinder instead of a 6-cylinder.

The AMG E63 adds to the track capability with bigger brakes and a heavier cooling system. It needs both, for its 603-hp 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, that rockets the AMG E63 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds. Mercedes makes a number of adjustments to the car, including the use of special glass for the front windshield and front side windows, thicker insulation, and higher-density carpeting for the rear. Our E450 rides on attractive 19-inch wheels and isn't library-quiet. We'd describe it as moderately quiet with room for improvement. Given all that, we wonder what the base car is like, but we haven't driven that version yet.
