The diesel alter-ego of the GTI is powered by a 2.0-liter TDi producing 170HP and 350Nm or 258lbs of torque, launching the hatch from standstill to 100km/h (62mph) in 8.1 sec and on to a top speed of 222km/h or 138mph. And what the GTD lacks in terms of performance compared to the GTI, it compensates with its lower fuel consumption (5.3lt /100km or 44.3mpg US for the DSG). But see that? See what a small thing that is? I’m winging about pedal travel, in part because there’s so little to quibble about, but also because the Golf TDI comes across as such a well-executed car that anything not remotely perfect seems out of place. I’m not saying the Golf TDI is perfect, but it’s done so many things right, I’d be perfectly happy to own one. Complete kit Active Sound incl. Also new are the Golf GTI’s pneumatic dampers with a choice of comfort, normal and sport modes. Comfort smoothes off the sometimes harsh edges of the old GTI without feeling wallowy (in fact it’s a great way to charge down a less than perfectly surfaced road). Normal is the only adaptive mode, offering comfort at lower speeds and firming up to sport levels when you’re pushing on. Then there’s sport. It’s firm without being jarring, but there’s clearly there’s no real point to sport if normal firms up when you need it anyway. However, it does bring with it a slightly meatier steering map which some drivers will enjoy. Crash Protection for Other Road Users Volkswagen introduced the sixth generation of the Golf in 2008 with three and five doors, at a time when the car industry was going down due to the world financial crisis.
